Looking to dissolve small areas into their larger zone so we don’t have small unmanageable areas in the script. What tool is the best for this?

If they are real small a simple 5×5 smooth or two can get rid of them. For the larger areas, you could right-click on the zone map\\\’s name in the tree and select Utilities-Create Contour Polygons. Once the shapefile is created outlining the zones, you can select the polygons in the shapefile that cover the areas you want to modify. Make the zone map your active layer and on the bottom toolbar select the \\\”Magic Wand\\\” (Modify Values Under Selected Polygon) to change the values of the zone map.

I agree with Clint. The smoothing filter is a great way to do this. One of the big things that can create these small cut up areas is higher resolution maps (NAIP / Sentinel). I always suggest giving them 5×5 smooths before merging them to build zones. You can still get these events, and when you get to the “Rx Creation” part. I sometimes do a couple 5×5 smooths on the zones.grd and “Save As” a new layer zones-SM.grd (SM for smoothed). This way i have a little more accuracy in my zones and the SM is for RX creation.

replied 4 years ago I have used the smoothing and it does help. The problem with it is as you repeat using the smoothing tool, some of the larger areas shrink to smaller areas that now are small enough that they also probably aren’t relevant for scripting. So essentially the problem doesn’t go away it just changes. I do like the smoothing tool however and I do use it. I was hoping to edit the grd file with something like a paint function that would just fill in the small areas with the color to blend it with the surrounding color. I know I can change the values on the shp file by selecting those small areas and using the magic wand to change the values. Just was hoping there was something less time-consuming. I’m editing a zone map that is coming from EC and Elevation data. Thanks for your help.
