When creating a corn seed Rx for a JD GS2/3/4 do I need to dissolve before I round to increment? Or can I just round to increment on the corn seed.grd and export it without dissolving?

Michael, both options could be correct. Clarification below. 
For me, using the merge zone results window to write the corn seed maps. I interpolated almost everything up front (fert and seed). Most of the time on corn seed, my preference is to use 1,000 seed breaks (done with the “round to increment” function you mentioned). This is done in the Map Window.. This would generally make your map fall into the hard breaks example below. 
If your “Corn Seed.grd” is in hard breaks (meaning it has less than 15 or 20 total rates in the map, you could do either option –

  • Export SHP Grid – No Dissolve – Center – Infinite – Output Res. adj to Approximate Count less the 10,000 – precision =0
  • or
  • Export SHP Grid – With Dissolve – Center – Infinite – Output Res = 6 on field 40-300ac & 8m on 300 – 600 -precision =0
    • Polygon count does not matter here, data will be dissolved into larger polygons. 

If your “Corn Seed.grd” is interpolated and has more than 20 rates in it –

  • Export SHP Grid – No Dissolve – Center – Infinite – Output Res. adj to Approximate Count less the 10,000 – precision =0
  • NOTE – NEVER dissolve interpolated maps with greater than 20 or 30 rate counts. = Controller problems.

Thanks for the response Kelly, one quick follow up question just to be sure what im doing is okay:

Im doing 1,000 seed breaks with 7 rates (merge zone results, interpolate output maps, then rounding to increment.) Is this is okay to export as GRX to a GS2/3?

Yes the SHP/SHX/DBF of either export SHP Grid will work in the JD the files needs to go into an Rx folder.

The Round to Increment – Corn Seed.grd can also be exported as a GRX, but that will only work with 2600 & 2630.

GRX export does not with 4600 series displays (GS4). I am going out on a limb here, but i am guessing the GRX will NOT work with the GS5 display either. If anyone can confirm this Please let us know. 🙂

Final Note: I do prefer the SHP Grid export on the Corn Seed – Hard Breaks vs. the GRX export.

If maps are interpolated, does not matter.

Okay cool, I think I will update my process next year and just export them all as SHP Grid. Will be handy to have this thread to refer to as im sure to forget about 80% of this by then 😂 Thanks for the insights Kelly.
